There are so many things competing for our kids’ attention and we know it’s ridiculously <\/em>hard to get them to focus on reading. Currently, 66% of kids are reading below grade level. So how can we help our young scholars?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating a positive reading culture is crucial for fostering literacy and improving reading levels among children. These seven tips will help to build that positive reading culture in your school, which will set your students up for a lifelong love of reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Elevate Books Above the Noise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encourage reading as a fun and enjoyable activity along with access to a wide variety of books that cater to different interests and reading levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Literati Book Fairs<\/a> are intentionally curated to drive your school\u2019s sales and introduce young readers to exciting new books\u2014including titles they may not have found otherwise. Our children\u2019s literature experts work with over 150 publishers to find compelling, well-crafted stories to resonate with your students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Lead by Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adults, role models, and other students should demonstrate their own enjoyment of reading. When children see others reading, they are more likely to view it as a desirable activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of my favorite parts of school was individual reading time. I loved seeing the different stories everyone wanted to read, including my teacher. We were reading on our own, but it felt like we were doing it as a team.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Establish Reading Routines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design comfortable and inviting reading areas where children can relax with books. These spaces should be stocked with engaging materials and be free from distractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Celebrate Achievements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognize and celebrate reading milestones and accomplishments. This can be done through awards, certificates, or public praise to reinforce positive behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Involve Families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engage parents and caregivers in the reading process by providing resources, hosting family reading events, and encouraging reading at home. Family involvement enhances support for reading skills development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur school hosts a summer reading program each year. As a community, we read the school-chosen book over summer and follow the provided calendar showing which chapter we should read to stay on track. The school then has community leaders read various chapters, hosts scavenger hunts across our town, and hosts events centered around the book. My kids love all the activities tied into the summer reading program and enjoy participating with their friends. It also helps to keep my kids’ reading skills sharp over the summer break.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Integrate Reading Across Subjects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
