With over a dozen installments and counting, this bestselling spinoff saga has inspired the production of a video game, an Off-Broadway musical, and now a feature film, set to open January 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have <em>Dog Man <\/em>fans at home hounding you to take them to the movie (even though you\u2019d sooner vacuum the curtains or alphabetize the pantry)? For those who aren\u2019t already steeped in the lore of this peculiar phenomenon, you might do well to bone up on the basics so you know what you\u2019re stepping into.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick breakdown of our hero\u2019s origin story:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A police officer and his canine partner have an unfortunate run-in with an explosive device.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The dog\u2019s head is surgically attached to the human\u2019s body (in almost certain violation of the Hippocratic Oath).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A new breed of law enforcement officer, known as Dog Man, is born.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While this sounds eerily similar to the premise of <em>RoboCop <\/em>(and the first book does indeed feature a Robo Chief)<em>, <\/em>rest assured that, instead of startling violence and incisive social commentary, you\u2019ll be treated to an uplifting and family-friendly tale of a dogged do-gooder hungry for justice\u2014and maybe some table scraps. Fun, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jokes aside (for now), these madcap stories undeniably spark joy in young readers, and the goofiness is balanced out with thoughtful depictions of primal instinct versus technological threat, individuals\u2019 capacity for both good and evil, and the value of loyalty and teamwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are more quirky characters to discover in this offbeat universe than just Dog Man\u2014let\u2019s meet some!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supporting Characters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the many personalities roaming the streets of Ohkay City\u2014or so it\u2019s called in the upcoming movie\u2014here are some you\u2019re bound to encounter should you and your kids attend a screening:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chief &#8211; <\/strong>Top brass on the force. He\u2019s given a lot of responsibility and none of the glamor. He\u2019s essentially kind-hearted but can become short-tempered while keeping Dog Man\u2019s focus from straying toward squirrels and such.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Petey &#8211; <\/strong>The so-called \u201cmost evilest cat in the world.\u201d He has technological know-how, a flattened tail, and a difficult past, which includes being framed for a mishap that got him booted from the Critter Scouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Li\u2019l Petey &#8211; <\/strong>Petey\u2019s clone\/son (in other words, a much younger clone). Though Petey wants him to follow in his evil footsteps, Li\u2019l Petey would rather do good, teaming up with Dog Man and taking on the persona of \u201cCat Kid.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grampa, a.k.a. Crud <\/strong>&#8211; Petey\u2019s father. According to a description in <em>Dog Man: Mothering Heights, <\/em>\u201cHe\u2019s a selfish, egotistical meanie who currently resides in cat jail. Petey and Li\u2019l Petey no longer associate with him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>80-Hexotron Droidformigon, a.k.a. 80-HD &#8211; <\/strong>A sandal-wearing robot originally built by Petey. He later joins a crime-fighting trio alongside Dog Man and Li\u2019l Petey. Although equipped with many gadgets, his greatest strength is creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sarah Hatoff &#8211; <\/strong>Known as the \u201cworld\u2019s best reporter,\u201d she provides a more objective point of view, but she also knows karate and actively participates in central events from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flippy the Fish &#8211; <\/strong>Originally given to the Chief as a gift. This metafictional frame captures the free-wheeling nature of the creative process, and the occasional crossed-out word only adds to the propulsive feeling of in-the-moment inspiration.
